Butter Biscuits

Fluffy Southern Butter Biscuits Recipe

These buttery, golden biscuits are simple to make and absolutely irresistible. Whether you're serving them with breakfast, smothering them in gravy, or pairing them with soup, these flaky butter biscuits rise high and bake up tender every time.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour, packed

(Use self-rising flour? Skip baking powder and salt.)

1 Tbsp baking powder

(Omit if using self-rising flour)

½ tsp salt

(Omit if using self-rising flour. If using unsalted butter, increase to ¾ tsp.)

½ cup salted butter, cut into small pieces

1 cup milk, regular or buttermilk

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C).

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

3. Add butter in small pieces. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour mixture until crumbly with pea-sized chunks.

4. Pour in the milk and stir with a wooden spoon just until combined. Do not overmix.

5. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Gently roll or press it to ¾-inch thickness.

6. Cut biscuits with a biscuit cutter or cookie cutter. Place them on an ungreased baking sheet or cast iron skillet, making sure they touch each other to encourage a taller rise.

7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.

Pro Tips

For ultra-flaky biscuits, freeze the butter for 10 minutes before cutting it in.

Use buttermilk for a richer flavor and extra tenderness.

Brushing the tops with melted butter right out of the oven adds even more buttery goodness.

Serving Suggestions

Top with honey or jam for breakfast.

Split and smother with sausage gravy.

Use them for mini sandwiches or sliders.
